A Brief List of Communication Milestones

(Speech and Language)

Birth-3 Months

  • quiets or smiles when you talk

  • turns and looks towards voices or people talking 

  • making cooing sounds such as 'oooh', 'aaaah', 'mmmm'

4-6 Months

  • ​giggles and laughsresponds to facial expressions

  • look at objects of interestreact to toys that make sounds

  • say vowel sounds 'uuuuuummm', 'daaaaa', 'aaaaagoo'

7-9 Months

  • looks at you when you call their name

  • stops for a moment when you say, 'no'

  • babbles long strings of sounds, like 'mamamama', 'upup', or 'babababa'

10-12 Months​​

  • points, waves, and shows or gives objects

  • plays games like 'peek-a-boo', blows kisses, enjoys dancing

  • starts saying first words like 'mama', 'dadda', 'hi', or 'bye'

  • starts copying sounds that you make

13-18 Months

  • points to one or more body parts when asked (example: head, belly, nose, eyes, arms, toes)

  • points to request things (drink, food, toy) or share information

  • shakes head for “no” and nods head for “yes"

  • looks around when asked “where” questions—like “Where’s your (favorite toy)?”

  • understands and uses words for common objects, some actions, and people in their lives

19-24 Months

  • understands and uses at least 50 different words for food, toys, animals, and body parts

  • puts two or more words together—like "more water" or "go outside"

  • follows two-step directions—like “Get the spoon, and put it on the table."

  • uses words to ask for help

  • uses possessives (words that show ownership) like "daddy's cup", "mommy's shoe"

  • uses words like me, mine, you

2-3 Years

  • Using 2+ words in phrases and sentences - like "I want juice", "that's my baby", "mommy come here", "look at me!"

  • says their name when asked 

  • uses some plural words like "birds", "toys"

  • uses words that end in -ed like "looked", "played" (may use these words incorrectly like "I runned"). 

  • asks why? and how? questions

  • Speech is becoming clearer but may not be understood by unfamiliar listeners or to people who do not know your child

    • clearly saying: 'p, b, m, h, w, d, and n' and most vowels in words

Who can receive services?

Any infant or toddler that is found to be in need of support for their development (through a free independent evaluation) can receive services. 

What does it cost?

Infant/Toddler Early Intervention is a FREE service for families in Pennsylvania.

Where do sessions take place?

Sessions take place wherever the child is - home, daycare, a babysitter's house, etc...

The first step is having your child evaluated through your county's Infant/Toddler Early Intervention program.

If you have already scheduled an evaluation for your child through your county's Early Intervention program, you can request Laughter and Language as your provider following the evaluation (if your child is eligible for services).

During each session, we give families evidence-based strategies that they can use right away to help their child progress with their communication skills outside of speech therapy sessions.
